What is a sneeze?

Sneezing is a reflex act of the body to forcefully blow air through the nose and mouth, clearing these passages when they become irritated.

Why do people sneeze?

Sneezing is a defense mechanism of the body. When people sneeze, they clear irritants in the nose. These may include harmful germs, dust, pollen and other fine organic plant and animal matter.

What causes one to sneeze?

Sneezing is caused by the following:

  • Allergic reaction (cat hairs, dust, pollen)
  • Nasal irritants (pepper, strong odors)
  • Infections (common colds, bacteria)

What should be done to avoid sneezing?

It may be difficult to prevent sneezing. However, avoiding areas where there are a lot of nasal irritants or allergens can help – for example, dusty rooms, warehouses and parks if allergic to pollen.

When should a doctor be consulted?

If sneezing becomes difficult to manage with home remedies, it is advisable to see a doctor. The doctor will check for the cause of the sneezing, whether it is infectious or whether it is due to an allergic reaction. Pain and fever medications, decongestants and mucolytics may be given by the doctor. Antibiotics may only be given for bacterial infections. Antihistamines are important for sneezing caused by allergy.
